Some people say that reading is not now as important as it was. Today we
have computers, films, TVs and photos. Why may you read if you can get whatever
information you need via the internet? Why may you read a novel if you can
enjoy watching it as a film? Why may you read a description of something if you
can watch it as a picture? Why may you read a newspaper to know the news if the
latest news is brought to you hourly on radio and TV?
Photography is certainly a wonderful invention; photos can give a very
accurate idea about places and people that we have never seen. Anyhow, a photo
of a lion for instance, can give you a very good impression about how a lion
looks like but it says nothing about where it is found or what its exact
size may be. But an encyclopedia is always better for good illustrations.
In the same way, a film is rich in action, movement, colour and music
but still reading a novel has more advantage than watching it as a film. Reading gives you your own
imagination to the events which is different from each one's imagination.
Newspapers are an important part of our lives if we want to understand
what is going on in our own community and other parts of the world. Watching
the news on TV or listening to it on radio can no doubt, be mastered
but still reading gives you more concentration.
Reading
is thus essential for information and pleasure. You need to be good readers to
prove that you are making the best use of your brain. Reading is a skill and it
needs practice, the more you read, the better readers you will be. Please, read
at least little every day.
